Week 36 saw industry people from across the world gather in Hong Kong, with many also making a quick visit to Guangzhou market before attending the fair. Imports of citrus from South Africa and Australia continued to dominate the market by a large margin with the increased volumes putting further pressure on the market. Fortunately in the coming weeks demand should assist sales as we approach Mid-Autumn Festival and National Holiday, however supply is substantial and will be a test for the market.
The weather in week 36 saw a mix of rainy, cloudy and sunny weather in Guangzhou with temperatures remaining warm but cloudy days were fortunately slightly cooler, while Shanghai remained warm with cloudy and rainy weather throughout most of the week. By the end of the week Shenzhen and Hong Kong saw clear blue skies with ample sunshine. Week 37’s forecast is for cloudy and rainy conditions in Guangzhou as Shanghai is expected to be cloudy for most of the week. Temperatures in the north continue to slowly decrease.
Let’s see Apples performance during the week. Asking prices for Chilean Royal Gala remained similar to week 35, however movement for the variety slowed down further. Most of the Premium specification fruit available on the market showing good coloration and limited visual concern continued to price and gradually move at between ¥230-250 (count #100/113, 19.2kg), while larger sized fruit remained at between ¥190-220 (count #80/90, 19.2kg). Both New Zealand Royal Gala and U.S.A Gala were also available on the market also showing slow movement even for top quality brands showing good quality. Good quality New Zealand Royal Gala priced at between ¥230-240 (count #70/80, 17.6kg) while good quality arrivals of U.S.A Gala priced between ¥280-290 while good quality stocks priced at ¥250-260 (20kg).
Movement for New Zealand Queen remained slow in week 36, as many importers tried to maintain prices at just above breakeven levels reluctant to suffer losses. Most of the available fresher stocks on the market priced in the range ¥350-400 (count #70/80, 17.6kg), with new arrivals pricing ¥10-30 higher with slow movement. Old stocks remain anything between ¥200-300. Only limited brands of NZ Queen with consistent quality continued to price above the market and move as some importers asked ¥470-500 (count #70/80, 17.6kg).
Red Delicious from the U.S.A remain steady and similar to week 35. The fresh crop from the U.S.A still not yet available, as C.A stocks slowly decrease. Good quality Premium specification Red Delicious packed in popular brands priced between ¥300-320 (count #72/80, 20kg), as most of the Premium fruit remained priced in the range ¥260-280 (count #72/80, 20kg).
For the exports volume to China, Chilean Royal Gala exports to China and Hong Kong till week 35, year to date volumes are up 7% at 820k cartons shipped. Departures out of the C.A rooms continue to decline as the season comes to a finish as the market distributes the remainder of the supply.
