Ecuador had been working on exporting mangos to one of world’s largest consumer--China for ages yet no agreement had been reached until very recently. It is confirmed that China accepted hot water treatment as a quarantine method for Ecuadorian mangos.
Administration of Quality Supervision,Inspection and Quarantine(AQSIQ) confirmed that a protocal on Ecuadorian mangos exporting to China had been initialed. Later a group of experts were sent to Ecuador to investigate local mango plantations and based on their evaluation, AQSIQ finally approved that qualified Ecuadorian mangos are allowed to enter Chinese market.
Ecuador had started to plant mangos since 1980, and ranked one of the largest mango producers in the world. More than 7700 hectares of mangoes are planted in Ecuador, which are famous for its unique tropical flavor. The mango skin appears to be red or yellow depends on its soil and the major varieties include Tommy Atkins, Haden, Keitt and Ataulfo. Nearly 84% Ecuadorian mangoes are exported. The main destinations are US and Europe, Japan as well. Because of its exotic flavor, Ecuadorian mangoes are also called “tropical apples” in those nations.
